Spa & Leisure
Every now and again you come across a spa experience that is entirely different to any other, and that was certainly the goal at Ruthin Castle’s The Moat. The spa rests in the rustic woodland grounds of an authentic Welsh castle and its moat so treatments alongside the environment really are designed to relax your mind and revive your spirit whether you’re visiting for half an hour or half a day. Inspired by Finnish, Russian and Siberian experiences, the spa and health club facilities include a sauna, steam room, relaxation area and a gym. There are also five treatment rooms, including a VIP couple’s room with a copper bath.
The treatments are equally unique as well – all bespoke and use Caudalie. The collection includes detoxifying body wraps, relaxing salt and oil scrubs and skin solution facials. Other product houses used at the spa also include Jessica, Gelish, and Bare Minerals. The whole experience is about lifting your spirits and escaping the daily grind for a while in an experience akin to a fairytale.
Hotel & Accommodation
The castle itself was built for Edward I in 1277, with later owners including Henry VIII and Elizabeth I. Although large parts were destroyed in the 17th century, today the 54 bedroom venue still boasts a historic charm as it nestles between in acres of parkland beside the Clwydian Range in North Wales. Meanwhile, the four star rooms are all uniquely decorated and densely textured, with detailed wallpaper and fabrics in six categories from Castle Rooms to the Prince of Wales suite. Bertie’s is the main restaurant – named for Edward VII’s nickname amongst family. Overseen by Chef Michael Cheetham, they serve an a la carte menu using local ingredients and has been awarded two AA Rosettes as proof of its culinary success. For lighter meals and afternoon tea next to a carved stone fireplace there is also the Library Bar, and a series of lounges and terraces as well. To really take advantage of the historic location however, Ruthin Castle hosts Medieval banquets, adding an alternative twist to group breaks.
