Hotel & Accommodation
An elegant, red brick property in the historic town of York, Middletons Hotel is like an escape to a period novel. Surrounded by carefully tended grounds and gardens, the tranquil retreat feels like a world of its own. This is not a spa hotel, but everything about it is deliciously relaxing and indulgent.
There are 56 individual hotel rooms spread across six different buildings, each with their own name: Lady Anne House, Cromwell House, Chaplin House, Sir Joseph Terry Cottages, No.56 Skeldergate and our event space, The Organ Factory. Each one is Grade II or Grade II* listed and is named for a notable person or event across the ages. For example, Lady Anne House takes its name from Dame Anne Middleton, who was the wife of the Sheriff of York in 1659, Peter Middleton, and funded the hospital with an endowment. Meanwhile, Chaplin House was the home of Hans Hess, a former director of York City Art Gallery and art expert but also hosted the late Charlie Chaplin himself.
In addition to the stylish rooms, which nod to the heritage of the property whilst also meeting the expectations of modern guests, the hotel’s Sawmill Restaurant is a treat in its own right. Tuck into leisurely lunches, sumptuous afternoon teas, nibbles when the mood takes your fancy, and outrageously decadent evening meals. It has a buzzing atmosphere that makes each day feel like a special occasion, but is also wonderful for simply sipping coffee and watching the world go by.
