What makes this an Elysium Collection spa?

Most loved by

It’s unquestionably romantic, but it’s also a fantastic and convivial place to visit with a
group of friends.

Wow-factor

Frankly, the design throughout, but in particular, the spa garden, curated by award-
winning garden designer Ann-Marie Powell and taking the spa experience outside from the panoramic sauna to the four sense loungers.

Exceptional spa feature

The spa is the first in the UK to introduce treatments on an Amber and Quartz Crystal Bed, which delivers thermal therapy by immersing the body in hot sand.

Best known for

Being a luxury country house hotel, but now it’s also complemented by the most beautiful adult-only, contemporary spa, which makes for an ideal destination as part of a weekend break or as a day spa destination in its own right.

Safe Hands for Cancer

Accredited by the SATCC and part of the Spabreaks.com Safe Hands for Cancer Collection, this spa welcomes people living with or beyond cancer and offers a number of specialist trained therapists.

Spa & Leisure

What makes it Elysium standard?

  • Exceptional design in an adult-only spa
  • A unique spa garden curated by an award-winning designer
  • The first amber and quartz crystal treatment bed
  • One of a kind spa treatments and their own product line
  • Indoor and outdoor spa facilities
  • Thoughtful details such as Dyson Supersonic hairdryers

The Cottonmill Spa is a new addition to Sopwell House. Elegant and dynamic, the adults-only spa has been designed in a way that’s sympathetic to the historic country house, and make the most of the beautiful surroundings. Glass, wood, slate hues and large windows are brought together in a contemporary but sensuous wellbeing experience. Air, fire and water meet with a touch of brass to really accentuate its luxury credentials. Alongside the latest in fitness facilities, a holistic approach makes it instantly welcoming. Facilities included a 14-metre pool, a Jacuzzi, a vitality pool, sauna, steam room, a gym and fitness suite and exercise studios. The experience extends outside as well in their exclusive Spa Club, with indoor/outdoor experience showers, a hydrotherapy pool, spa garden, outdoor hot tubs, botanical steam room, salt steam room, organic sauna, panoramic sauna, whisper room, deep relaxation room, four sense loungers and heated loungers. Meanwhile, dressing rooms feature Tom Dixon marble wall lights, with stone heated flooring and Dornbracht showers and Dyson Supersonic hairdryers.

The cherry on top is an extensive new treatment menu, which features therapies from ESPA, Elemis, Aromatherapy Associates, Jessica and Mii. Alongside massages and facials, you will find Cottonmill’s own signature treatments. They also have the UK’s first amber and quartz crystal bed, which deliver thermal therapy by immersing the body in hot sand. There’s a manicure and pedicure salon, and a rose relaxation room to retreat to post-treatment, complete with walls lined with acoustic ‘petals’ and zones divided by rose-tinted glass screens. Particular treatments include Cottonmill Sound and Sand, during which the bed gently vibrates while singing bowls are chimed, or the ELEMIS Quartz Poultice Massage, which incorporates warm quartz poultices to increase circulation and release tense muscles. Water massages have also been created with the Vichy massage shower. Ensuring a spa day can be part of a hotel stay as well as an experience in its own right, the spa also has its own restaurant, the Pantry for light lunches and drinks.

Hotel & Accommodation

Once the country home of Lord Mountbatten, Sopwell House has the welcoming ambience of a private abode combined with the grandeur of a Georgian manor house. The elegant venue in the Roman transit town of St Albans benefits from the peace and quiet of its own landscaped gardens as well as the convenient but rural backdrop of home counties Hertfordshire. Interiors are an exercise in understated opulence and refined taste. The 128 stylish and contemporary bedrooms, suites and apartments are all furnished in a sumptuous contemporary style. For greater privacy and choice, Sopwell House also boasts 16 individually designed, stylish Mews Suites behind private gates and separate to the main hotel. They feature details such as fireplaces and private terraces with cedar wood spa baths.   As you might expect from a noble home, food and drink is an important and carefully thought out part of the experience. The Restaurant is a fine dining experience set against a backdrop of live piano music. Meanwhile, the Brasserie is a vibrant open plan kitchen serving food with global inspiration. It’s a favourite amongst friends and groups, especially for special occasions. For teas, coffees and light bites during the day, the Conservatory is a white and tranquil space overlooking landscaped gardens, and it’s adjacent to the Conservatory Bar. Not to be missed of course is afternoon tea, served in the sumptuous Cocktail Lounge that’s also well suited to a post dinner drink or an aperitif such as the signature Mountbatten Cocktail.
